ST.PAUL (March 8, 2013) – Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) President Doug Peterson was re-elected as National Farmers Union (NFU) Secretary for the coming year at the 111thAnniversary National Farmers Union Convention held March 2-6 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Over 40 MFU members traveled to Massachusetts to set NFU’s policy road map for the coming year. Most important discussions were of another five year farm bill, transparency of post-farm costs in the dairy industry, clarification of food safety practices for farmers, and requirement of the United States Postal Service to continue Saturday mail service.
Requiring conservation compliance in order to be eligible for crop insurance was also an issue of great debate. Limitation of payments were discussed as a viable option, but not adopted. The focus of this discussion was on the impacts brought to family farms, beginning farmers, and southern crop farmers.
Retired President and General Manager of Minnesota Farmers Union Insurance Agency, Jim Frederickson, received a Meritorious Service Award for his work contributing to Farmers Union and the greater American agricultural sector.
MFU Member Tim Velde served as member of NFU’s policy committee. Velde has participated on MFU’s policy committee many years, now on the national level for the first time.
The Silver Star Award is NFU’s highest membership award. This year three were awarded, all of which were to Minnesotan recipients. These Recipients were MFU Vice President Gary Wertish, Bessie Klose, and Alan Perish. Overall 10 membership awards were presented, nine of those were to Minnesota members.
MFU President Doug Peterson is available for further comment on this convention.
The 2013 National Farmers Union national convention will be held Saturday, March 2-Tuesday, March 5 at the Sheraton Monarch Place in Springfield, Massachusetts.
